The Denison ISD has a strong history of excellence in the classroom, and three nearby colleges and universities create an easy pathway for citizens to pursue academic degrees, learn hands-on technical skills, maintain professional credentials, or learn more about a hobby or interest. Grayson College

Grayson College is a two-year community college with a proud tradition of delivering higher education designed to meet the educational goals of a diverse set of learners. The academic, technical, and continuing education programs and curriculum provide students with skills and knowledge that transfer to universities and/or help them join the workforce. Whether you want to work toward your degree, make yourself more marketable, or sharpen a few skills, we can help you get there. Helping students be successful and helping build a quality workforce has been Grayson College’s role in the region for more than five decades. GC offers classes on its Main Campus in Denison, a West Campus near North Texas Regional Airport, the South Campus in Van Alstyne, and Online.

Start at GC and complete your degree at a university. Articulation agreements are formal agreements between two colleges or universities, usually for a specific program or degree. Grayson College has articulation agreements with many colleges and universities, and most offer online degree programs.

Dual Credit programs allow high school students to earn college credit while completing required high school courses, thus earning students credit in both institutions. Hundreds of students in the county take advantage of this articulation agreement to get a head start on their college degrees. Students may enroll in academic courses and/or technical courses.

Enrollment: Approximately 4,500 credit-seeking students attend GC each semester, and another estimated 3,000 participate in continuing education or non-credit courses.

 

Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SE) provides an environment of academic excellence that enables students to reach their highest potential. By having personal access to excellent teaching, challenging academic programs, and extracurricular experiences, students will develop skills and habits that promote values for career preparation, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning. SE is located in Durant, OK, an easy half-hour drive from Denison.

The major emphasis at Southeastern continues to be a quality undergraduate education. The University offers an array of baccalaureate-level programs that prepare students for a changing society. In addition, selected graduate-level programs are provided to serve the needs of the region. In fulfilling its mission, Southeastern fosters the region’s cultural opportunities, economic growth, environmental quality, scientific and technological progress, as well as social and personal well-being.

Austin College

Austin College, located in nearby Sherman, TX, is a small, private Liberal Arts College celebrating over 165 years of preparing young minds for the world. Come experience the Austin College community and its beautiful 85-acre campus for yourself. Austin College invites you to experience an innovative approach to a liberal arts education. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, this distinctive college offers an experiential learning environment with legendary teaching.

DISD Excellence and Growth

Newsweek has repeatedly ranked Denison High School in the top 4% of high-performing schools in the nation. State-wide rankings and scores reinforce the excellent education that is happening in our district.

A recent $80 million bond built a new high school campus and renovated all existing elementary, intermediate, and middle school campuses. In Fall 2014, Denison became the proud home of one of the most sophisticated and beautiful high schools in the State of Texas. Set atop a hill with panoramic views in all directions, the new Denison High School continues to offer a top-quality education in a facility that is reflective of the community’s DENISON PROUD! spirit. In 2019 the community supported an additional $20.8 million bond to expand Mayes and Hyde Park Elementary Schools to address significant growth and provide relief from overcrowding.

In summary, Denison schools are among the best in Texas, the result of a unique school-community partnership that ensures an educational experience that is exciting, engaged, collaborative, and interactive. It’s a partnership that provides all Denison children with a firm foundation for excellence in education and in life.

Denison has no rush-hour traffic. All campuses remain free of crime and gangs. Realigned and restructured elementary and middle schools offer age-appropriate learning in friendly, neighborhood environments. A brand new high school provides students with state-of-the-art technology supported by a visionary community that backs its teachers and children 100%. It’s why the community of Denison approved an $80 million bond package for a new state-of-the-art high school as well as upgrades to all other facilities. Denison ISD was named to the prestigious “Top 10 Best School Districts in Texas” list by Education Resources Group, a respected research firm in Houston. Denison schools consistently score above the state average on standardized tests in virtually all areas, often by as much as 20 percentage points.

All Denison schools and the district as a whole consistently earn more than 30 Gold Performance Acknowledgment awards annually, at all grade levels, in writing, math, science, reading, and social studies. Denison high school students are involved in dual credit programs that provide a pipeline for area manufacturing. Existing are AP programs that allow them to compete for national scholarships, award-winning Robotics competitions, outstanding theater, band, art, culinary and athletic programs, and many academic and extra-curricular organizations.

Denison’s “New Teacher Mentoring” program supports and encourages teachers in every area of their educational lives. “Our new teacher mentoring program provides a comfort zone and helping hand throughout our teachers’ first years and beyond, allowing rookies to become comfortable and confident,” said mentor Becky Russell. “I truly believe that our district is the best and most supportive in Texas.
